TV tonight: 'Law & Order: SVU'

CRITIC'S CORNER CHAT: Read the latest transcript, tweet early questions to @BiancoRobert using hashtag #AskBianco Criminal Minds | CBS, 9 online ET/PT Unless you're a devoted Minds fan, you're generally better off on Wednesdays sticking to Modern Family or SVU. But if you're curious about what Minds is up to these days and looking for a chance to check in, you might as well pick an episode that boasts a guest shot by Camryn Manheim, a fine actor who has yet to find a TV role as good as the one she had in The Practice. Maybe next season. ALSO: Robert Bianco reviews 'Ironside' Nashville| ABC, 10 ET/PT There's more trouble in store, naturally, for country stars Rayna and Juliette, and it's coming in the form of new label chief Jeff Fordham played by Oliver Hudson. Apparently, Jeff is not quite on board with Rayna's plan to launch her own label or Juliette's desire to be taken more seriously as an artist. As for any desire the show might have had to be taken more seriously, it was pretty much crushed last season when it hopped on the crazy train.
Source:

Welcome to TV's second "Golden Age"

"In many cases, the content rights don't really allow that to happen. So, Chromecast provides a work-around." Sappington said consumers use their laptops and Google's Chrome browser to access the free Hulu site and select a TV episode, then transfer the video to the TV via the Chromecast streaming device. Sports fans are using the same back-door technique to watch soccer matches that NBC Sports streams online but doesn't broadcast. "They only broadcast one or two soccer matches, but online they have them all," Sappington said. Such screen-shifting would be hard to thwart, Sappington said, because TV networks want to create a legitimate way for viewers to catch up on shows they may have missed (and capitalize on that audience through advertising).
Source:,0,5284602.story

The proposed "Constantine" TV series centers on John Constantine, an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending humanity against dark forces from beyond. NBC has reportedly committed to a script plus penalty for the project which will be written and executive produced by Goyer and Cerone. The project is set up at Warner Bros. TV, which earlier this week earned a straight-to-series order from Fox for Batman prequel series "Gotham," which will focus on the character of Commissioner Jim Gordon back when he was still a detective at the Gotham Police Department, as well as the criminals that made the city infamous. The character of John Constantine was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben, and made his first appearance in the "Swamp Thing" comics in 1985 before going on to headline his own series, "Hellblazer" and "Constantine." He was played as an American by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film of the same name, despite the character originally being British. DC Comics is on something of a hot streak this development season -- in addition to "Gotham" and "Constantine," The CW's "Arrow" is about to enter its second season and is serving as a launching pad for a potential spinoff series based on The Flash, who will be played by "Glee's" Grant Gustin . Earlier this week, Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." series debuted with a hefty 11.9 million viewers , making it the highest-rated drama premiere on any network in four years.
Source:

Movie Review: Can Robert Deniro Save ‘the Family’?

But Hollywood pays attention to box office numbers, not reviews, and The Smurfs 2 ended up earning more money. Grown Ups 2, the Adam Sandler-helmed sequel that received only a 7 percent positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, proved even more financially successful over the long term. This isnt to say that all sequels are bad. I loved Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and Despicable Me 2, all of which proved to be some of the biggest box office successes of the summer. But when added to the success of Fast and Furious 6, another summer movie that saw huge returns, they send a neon-bright message to Hollywood that what we really want is to see characters weve already seen before. Thankfully, there were also a handful of original movies that made it through the summer season with their heads held high. Lee Daniels The Butler topped the box office for three weeks over much splashier movies. The horror movie The Conjuring stormed its way into theaters with a first-place opening weekend finish, and by this point in Kim Kardashian Ray J tape the season has taken in over $220 million in foreign and domestic ticket sales.
Source:

Further complicating matters is that Giovanni is working on a tell-all book, though its really just a bad plot device to feed us his back story. Add to that the fact that a mob boss has put a $20 million bounty on Giovannis head, and our poor FBI agent Jones has his work more than cut out for him. The Familys funniest moments arent derived from the writing but from the performances. This is an extremely weak script that plays on tired mob stereotypes, buttressed by a brutality thats better suited for a mob drama than a dark comedy. The saving grace here is the cast, as De Niro, Pfeiffer and Jones mug their way out of Bessons awkward comedic choices.
Source:

Chinese e-car set for "Transformers" movie debut

Cage picks up on this vibe of hers and really milks it. The concern in his eyes is touching. The ruggedly beautiful Alaskan setting is ideal for a crime drama of this sort, lending an air of gloom and menace that you wouldn't get in more hospitable climes. Cusack's portrayal of the murderer is refreshingly uncharismatic. There are enough charming and lovable killers out there; it's nice to see a loathsome creep for a change. The movie is based on a true story, which you probably shouldn't dwell on too much as it will make you despair for mankind.
Source:

‘Insidious: Chapter 2,’ movie review

MY CAPTAIN! That's what people all around the world were saying in April 2009 when a small band of Somali raiders hijacked the Maersk Alabama cargo ship in the Indian Ocean and held its crew for ransom, triggering a deadly standoff with U.S. Navy warships. Pirates hadn't captured an American vessel since the early 1800s, and the outcome hinged on the actions and decisions of a single blue-collar Everyman, a veteran merchant mariner named Capt. Paramount's local partner, China Movie Channel, declined to comment. The new movie is being filmed in both the United States and China, with Chinese singer/actor Han Geng making his English-language debut, according to a blog posted on Paramount Pictures' Facebook page. The film's producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, told the Beijing News earlier this month the movie would feature locally-made cars.
