How celebrities from Bon Jovi to Dirk Nowitzki responded to Kidd

Its not enough to just be a beautiful celebrity to come and get behind this cause, Kwawu said. If the person is choosing very carefully and someone resonates in various communities, I do think it could go a long way in educating the public and getting the word across. Penn, who was associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement in 2010, was a co-chair of the re-election campaign for the president. Health insurance enrollment has been declining since 2010, according to a Gallup poll. Approximately 24 percent of 18- to 25-year-olds are uninsured, compared with 28 percent in the third quarter of 2010. With health care marketplaces opening in a few months, the administration wants to persuade young consumers to purchase insurance. The next few months leading up to the opening of these marketplaces are a critical time for youth engagement and outreach efforts, a White House official said in a statement. The reach of these national stars spreads beyond the beltway to fans of their television shows, movies, and music and the power of these artists to speak through social more media is especially critical. | By KATE STANTON, UPI.com Gloria Steinem, Jay Leno, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Jackson and Noam Chomsky have signed an open letter to California Gov. Jerry Brown in support of the 385 inmates still on hunger strike in California's prisons. The hunger strikers, who have been refusing meals since July 8, are demanding an end to indefinite solitary confinement because they believe it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The letter, organized by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, describes solitary confinement as "a practice where prisoners are confined to a small, windowless cell, without sunlight, fresh air, meaningful human contact or constructive activity for many years, even decades." Our various faith traditions hold in common a belief in the dignity and worth of each human person. Prolonged and indefinite solitary confinement violates basic religious values of justice, compassion, and healing. Steinem and Jackson are long-time civil rights crusaders. But Raitt's interactions with prisoners during a performance at San Quentin "made a profound impact" on her, while Jay Leno's wife, Mavis, was inspired to join the cause after a conversation with UCLA psychiatry professor Susan Smalley.
Source: http://www.upi.com/blog/2013/07/30/Gloria-Steinem-Jay-Leno-among-celebrities-joining-prisoners-calls-for-end-to-solitary-confinement/8861375231415/

The middle school, for children aged nine to 13, is bringing in a trousers-only rule from September. It is also introducing a blouse ban next year, after which girls will be required to wear shirts like their male classmates. The ban comes as increasing numbers of young girls copy the sexy schoolgirl look popularised by celebrities such as Rihanna and Katy Perry. Pupils of TVs fictitious Waterloo Road school are also often seen in short skirts. David Doubtfire, headmaster of Walkwood Church of England Middle School in Redditch, Worcestershire, said the ban would eliminate unladylike short skirts. He added: Some of the older girls were beginning to wear extremely short skirts. It was becoming difficult, especially when it came to them sitting down in the kim kardashian magazine cover hall.
Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2380566/Girls-NINE-told-wear-skirts-Middle-school-introduces-trousers-rule-youngsters-copy-celebrities.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
